T : today we are going to attach your attention to the main topic “Ukraine of today”. The lesson is going to be accompanied by your projects, interviews and discussions on the core problems the Ukrainians faced today.
P1 : we have already spoken about Ukraine as our motherland, checked our knowledge in geography and history, compared the climatic diversity of Ukraine and Great Britain, structured the political system of the country in comparison with the political system of the UK.
P2 : As a matter of fact, we have enough information to discuss the youth problems and the problems of environmental protection.
T : So, the task of our testing lesson is to summarise everything you are to be involved in. I suppose that you are ready to attract us with your projects about the miracles which are endless and enjoy white popularity with visitors and tourists.
P1 : Let’s start our fantastic excursion around Kyiv. No doubt, that it will amuse and encourage your imagination.
(the projects of pupils and their comments with the help of interactive board)
P2 : Imagine, that you have an opportunity to see around one of the ancient city of Ukraine. XV centuries have already rushed over it’s old fields. Seeing is believing as they say and you can observe and touch upon the “musts” of the capital. Don’t failed to visit this landmarks while in Kyiv.

Kievo-Pecherska lavra Monastery. Monastery is picturesquely situated on a hill overlooking the Dnipro river. Founded in 1051 by monks, its spectacular structures were added on over the years in classical, Byzantine and Ukranian Baroque styles. Spread over the hills along the bank of the Dnipro river, the Lavra Minastery is a “must see” visit. This functioning monastery consists of numerous churches, towers, and miles of underground tunnels (caves) with ancient crypts and ecclesiastical objects. The most interesting museums of Ukraine are also located on the grounds of Monastery. Among them are the Museum of Historical Treasures and Jewellery, the Museum of Ukrainian Decorative and Applied Art, the Museum of Miniatures.

The Museum of historical treasures and jewellery. Unique collection of precious metal and stone articles dating back to pre-Christian era, Kyiv Rus-Ukraine, Byzanrium, Middle-Ages Ukraine and until today.

The state museum of Ukrainian decorative and applied arts. Extensive collections of folk icons, embroideries: “pysanky” (Easter eggs), pottery, folk, costumes, etc. The most beautiful collections in Ukraine.

St. Sophia’s Cathedral.  It is the oldest survived church that was built in 1037 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise. The majestic 13-domed church became a Holy place of worship for ancient Kyivites, as well as a major cultural and political centre in Kyivan-Rus. Ceremonies to designate envoys, public meetings, and the writing of chronicles took place here. The first library in Kyivan Rus was located here. The cathedral bears a resemblance to Byzantine constructions, but there is no direct analogy. The original forms of the Romanesque style were preserved until the 17th century. The church facades were not plastered and were embellished with decorative niches, ornaments, and paintings. The interior reveals the harmonious union of mosaics and fresco paintings in a style similar to the Byzantine capital style. The complex of buildings (2 churches, bell-tower, school, monks' cells, the residence of the Metropolitan) was added on up until the 19th century mostly in Renaissance and Ukrainian Baroque styles. Was the main metropolitan church of Kyivan Rus'-Ukraine.

Andreievsky Uzviz
Running down Andreyevskaya Hill the Anriyivskiy descent was the shortest way from upper town to Podil (down to Dnipro). By an ancient legend the apostle St. Andrew walked this way. Just few steps to the top of the hill he stopped and stuck his crozier saying that a city of God would grow on that place. In 1754 St. Andrew's Cathedral was designed by the Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli. The single-domed cathedral with its five lesser cupolas seems to hover over the city. There is a picturesque path-way around the Cathedral. The St. Andrew's Descent is like a cultural centre for Kyivans. Andriyivsky Uzviz formed the shortest route between the aristocratic Upper Town and the tradesmen's town, Podil. It began from the already familiar Desyatinnaya and St. Andrew's churches and ran down a steep slope to Kontraktova square. The Uzviz meaning descent acquired its present appearance in the late 19th century, and it has not changed much since. It consists of mainly of two and three storied stone buildings. Since the latest restoration the street has become part of the Ancient Kyiv preservation area. It is also popular with both locals and visitors because of its literary associations. Bulgakov lived there, the area around St. Andrew's Cathedral was the favourite place for walks for the famous Russian writer, Nikolay Gogol. The Richard's Castle is also located there.

St. Volodymyr`s Cathedral.
Built in 1882 in neo-Byzantine style; its beauty is dramatic.
This is the Seat of the Patriarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchy. Located on Boulevard Tarasa Shevchenka, St. Vladimir's Cathedral was originally designed by Ivan Strom and the building was begun by Alexander Beretti and Paul Sparro and completed by Vladimir Nikolayev. The construction and interior decorations took more than 30 years (1862-96). This seven dome three-aisled church resembles the buildings of old Ukraine only slightly. Its walls are loaded with ornamental details. The interior is decorated in the style of Prince Vladimir's period. The interior completed by a team of outstanding artists accomplished the work in eleven years. The main facade is decorated with a double door made of oxidized bronze with enamel, carving and openwork tracery. On the sides of the door are figures of Princess Olga and Prince Vladimir made of embossed bronze and portrayed against a blue enamel background.
Its services are conducted in Ukrainian.

Kyiv-Mohyla Academy
The original Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, founded by the Metropolitan of Kyiv Petro Mohyla in 1615, was one of the most distinguished and earliest among higher educational institutions in Eastern Europe. Its aim was to master the intellectual skills and learning of contemporary Europe and to apply them to the improvement of education in Ukraine.

Vydubychi Monastery. The monastery was established between 1070 and 1077 by Vsevolod, son of Yaroslav the Wise. It was a family cloister of Vsevolod's son Vladimir Monomakh and his descendants. The monastery was continuously protected by Ukraine's hetmans and aristocratic families.

Mariyinsky Palace in Kiev is a picturesque Baroque palace on the hilly bank of the Dnieper River. The palace is the official ceremonial residence of the President of Ukraine and adjoins the neo-classical building of the Verkhovna Rada (parliament) of Ukraine. The palace was requested to be constructed in 1744 by the Russian Empress Elizaveta Petrovna, and was designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the most famous architect working in the Russian empire at that time. One of the students of Rastrelli, Ivan Michurin, together with a group of other architects, completed the palace in 1752. During the years of the Russian Civil War in 1917-20, the palace was used as a military headquarters. In the 1920s the building belonged to an agricultural school, soon after which it became a museum. The Mariyinsky was badly damaged in World War II, and restored at the end of the 1940s. Another major restoration was completed in the early 1980s.

PhotoNational museum of fine arts. Built in 1900 in Greek Doric style. Houses a huge collection of 12-18 centuries icons, paintings and sculptures of the Ukrainian masters, Ukrainian avant-garde.
Museum of folk architecture and folk ways of Ukraine. Reconstruction of architecture and life of various regions of Ukraine, Houses, churches, mills, farm buildings and equipment, tools and clothing of the 16-th – 19-th centuries.
